Completely re-engineered, the 6D ATS-1R street helmet climbs to a whole new level of safety performance.
With proven results on tracks around the world, the advanced omni-directional suspension (ODS) brings even greater energy mitigation performance to the system while also contributing to a lighter overall weight. Originally developed within 6D’s award winning work during the NFL’s Head Health Challenge III competition, advanced ODS offers significant improvements in both linear and angular acceleration mitigation performance. Check out the video at the end of the post for more details.
6D’s Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) starts working the instant any force is applied to the shell. Its suspended inner liner travels and shears under crash impact loading thereby reducing energy transfer to the brain.
The advanced ODS system provides broad-range protection, with its unique design freer to manage shearing loads while managing linear compressions with a combination of isolation dampers and variable height EPS damping towers.
This system helps to protect against angular acceleration, a rotational force that is generated from oblique angle impacts to the helmet surface resulting in shearing, stretching, and tearing, of the soft tissues within the brain. The medical community has determined that angular acceleration is the primary cause of concussion, traumatic brain injury and worse. Whilst helmets have been proven to save lives, what many don’t realise is that a helmeted head can actually sustain the same degree of angular acceleration as an un-helmeted head when subjected to identical impacts. This is because the helmet is directly “coupled” to the wearer’s head. One of the major benefit features of Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) is that it effectively “uncouples” that relationship allowing the shell and outer liner to shear independently to the inner layer and the head-form; thereby scrubbing off a high percentage of the angular acceleration force.
This technology has been heavily influenced by the 6D ATR-2 MX helmet, taking off-road safety features to the streets for greater protection against low-threshold energy/low impact accidents, which are the most common type of accident.
Safety features aren’t the only upgrade for the ATR-1R, with the 3K carbon fibre shell now 200g lighter than the previous model, new shield base plates providing an improved shield feel and sealing, and improved fit with a larger shell opening and new cheek pad shape. There are multiple pad options for a customisable fit and new chin curtain and neck cuff. The aerodynamic wing maximises efficiency by reducing drag, buffeting and lift at higher speeds. Within the comfortable liner are integrated speaker pockets and is eyewear compatible.
The anti-scratch shield (Certified VESC-8) offers UV protection, internal breath guard, tool-less changing and ten position shield adjustment with lockdown lever. Best of all, there’s a clear PINLOCK® 120 anti-fog insert included.
Ventilation is imperative for comfort, and the ATR-1R doesn’t disappoint. Four adjustable intake ports channel fresh air into the helmet where it is managed by a network of 15 transfer ports and 5 exhaust ports to keep the air moving. Sculpted adjustable intakes direct air into the chin, brow, and crown regions of the helmet and are easily operated with gloves on. Exhaust vents have been optimally positioned top, side and rear to take advantage of the negative-pressure effects of air traveling over the helmet’s surface to aid internal air circulation. Internal brow vents pull air across the inside of the shields’ surface to aid cooling and fogging dissipation.
THE DYNAMICS OF 6D’S ODS ENERGY MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY
6D’s patented Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) technology is a fully active, in-helmet suspension and kinetic energy management system. Engineered to uncouple the helmet’s exterior shell from the inner EPS liner, the system effectively mitigates energy transfer to the head and brain of the rider during any given accident or impact event.
- 2 separate EPS liners separated by an array of elastomeric isolation dampers
- 3-dimensional displacement of the inner liner upon impact
- Reduces linear and angular acceleration forces to the head and brain
- Superior performance for low, medium, and high-velocity impacts
